Job Summary and Qualifications

The PBX Operator relays incoming and outgoing calls routed through the switchboard, overheard pages and pagers. Monitors fire and other alarms. Releases patient condition according to hospital policy and distributes reports or copies accordingly. Must be able to communicate with security and maintenance on hand-held radio. Participates in Performance Improvement activities to assure continuous Quality Improvement. Maintains cultural and diversity awareness when dealing with patients, visitors, co-workers and all other customers. Promotes a supportive, team-work oriented environment. Fulfills departmental responsibilities with the long-range plan, mission, vision and values of Horizon.

Position Qualifications

· Previous hospital experience with public communications is preferred

Performance Expectations

· Must demonstrate the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Validation Checklist.

· Meets mutually-agreed upon performance goals and objectives as listed on the Performance Management Plan.

Work Environment

· Subject to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries

· Cannot leave work area unattended

· Must be flexible, work at a fast pace and manage several projects at a time

· Will be required to work weekday, weekends and holidays

· Frequent interdisciplinary contact with other departments and health care professionals.

· Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances (accident, injury and illness)

· During low census, staff may be required to leave early and rotate days off

Physical Abilities

· Potential prolonged sitting

· May lift or push supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. from locations at or above shoulder level; required to obtain assistance for lifting more than 25 lbs.

· Must use proper body mechanics while moving and lifting

· Hearing capability ranging from understanding a whispered command to withstand loud equipment and/or alarm noises.
